Ryan Palmer, who earlier this month claimed his second career title, will be joined by three other 2008 PGA Tour tournament winners in the 37th annual Callaway Golf Pebble Beach Invitational presented by Merrill Lynch. The unique 72-hole event, which features 81 professionals from the four major tours as well as mini-tour players and club pros, will be held Nov. 18-23 at Pebble Beach Golf Links, Spyglass Hill Golf Course and Del Monte Golf Course.

Walking in downtown Carmel at night is always a treat. It’s quiet, the art gallery windows seem different and there’s a local pub or two — Jack London’s and Brophy’s come to mind — within walking distance from any accommodation location.

The Monterey Peninsula has a diverse selection of restaurants, inexpensive sandwich shops to family restaurants, national chains to world renowned, exclusive fine-dining establishments. Unfortunately, the Monterey Peninsula also has a good share of restaurants that come and go, casualties of the fluctuating economy and as a world famous area that relies heavily on its tourism industry to support local establishments.

Asilomar State Beach and its accompanying conference center are among the most well-known destinations on the Monterey Peninsula. It’s surprising, therefore, that several other nearby locations are among the same area’s most unheralded accommodation choices. One option is Pacific Gardens Inn. It’s located across the street from Asilomar and offers a quaint alternative for area visitors seeking a smaller, family friendly inn.
